Eco Friendly Water Heating Systems For Dairy Farms

My family and myself run a dairy farm in North Devon and like most prior to DairyTherm Systems being installed we used heat recovery and two Cotswold tanks to generate our hot water. This was all prior to the horrendous price increases for electricity.

We acquired the DairyTherm System in July 2021 and since that time it has produced hot water as we were promised. In the process of running the new system we have significantly reduced the amount of hot water we had previously been generating, which in turn has saved us even more.

Like all new systems we have had some little niggles, but the system has continually produced the hot water and DairyTherm have responded promptly on each occasion to resolve the problem.

We would, especially in the light of increasing electricity prices suggest that other dairy farms look at this system to not only reduce the amount of electricity used but, in the process, reduce the Carbon footprint of the farm.

Being an OMSCo Farm of the Year and supplying our own milk direct to the public cleanliness’ and hygiene are at the top of our list, when it comes to milk production.

Like all Dairy Farms one of the ways we achieve this is by cleaning the parlour with hot water, along with the bulk tanks. The production of this hot water has become very expensive in recent times, so we are very glad with invested in a Dairytherm System some three years ago. The system provides all our hot water in a highly efficient way, using the state of the art technology, so producing our hot water requirement at a much lower cost.

We would recommend any Dairy Farm who is struggling with current electricity costs to consider this system to produce their hot water as this is one of the ways you can reduce your electricity consumption.

As a Family Dairy Farm, we try to save money where we can, and prior to our Dairytherm System we used heating elements to heat the water in our two tanks, along with all their inefficiencies, heat loss and replacing the elements. There are very few things you can buy for the farm that allow you to save electricity, but the Dairytherm System does just that, by giving us 3.5 times more heat for our Kw of electricity. With this modern technology we now have one of our largest expenses covered cooling the milk next. As we are fairly limited for space, Dairytherm built us a special unit which removes the machine from harm’s way.

We are safeguarded from the electricity increase by contract for a little while longer, but are fully aware that the price increase will come, which means the savings from the Dairytherm unit will double, when it does. In addition to reducing our electricity consumption this system also means we reduce our Carbon Footprint, which is becoming talked about more and more. We keep records for Red Tractor like a lot of farms, and looking over them the return on our wash down is always well over the requirement.

I would say to any Dairy farmer, look at this system, and see the benefits it has for your farm, as none of us want the price rise for our milk, just to be passed on to the utility companies.
